Black Friday results stronger than expected; a sampling of promotional levels
December 01, 2008 07:27 AM

Black Friday sales turned out better than expected, thanks to deep discounts and pent up demand that drove traffic.

ShopperTrak RCT, a tracking and measurement service used by malls and retailers, says retail sales increased 3 percent over 2007 - and Black Friday 2007 was up 8 percent vs. 2006.

Regionally, the South had the strongest sales with a 3.4 percent rise over 2007, the Midwest rose 3 percent, the West was up 2.7 percent and in the Northeast, sales increased 2.6 percent.

A different survey commissioned by the National Retail Federation showed more than 172 million shoppers visited stores and websites over Black Friday weekend, up from 147 ...  Read More...     Email to Friend

Executive Edition Sales tips from the masters: Tom Holbrook
December 01, 2008 06:00 AM

During my conversations with retailers and industry executives this year, I keep hearing a similar theme: the action sports industry needs to better train its sales force.

I thought it would be informative to ask two industry sales legends for their insights into how to succeed in sales. Today, we get advice from Tom Holbrook, executive vice president and ambassador at large for Quiksilver, who was one of the original Quiksilver salesmen. Tomorrow, I talk with Laurent Vrignaud of Big Dreams Inc., who owns and operates a sales agency with 23 employees that sells all of Burton's brands in California, Arizona, Nevada and Hawaii.

The two master salesmen took ...  Read More...

Journeys, Foot Locker comment on skate
November 26, 2008 06:22 AM

Skate shoes were a major driver of Journeys 4 percent comp increase in the third quarter, executives from parent company Genesco said during an earnings conference call yesterday.

The company believes skate and women's boots are a key advantage for Journeys heading into the holiday season. The company expects Journeys comps in the fourth quarter to range from down low-single digits to up low-single digits.

Genesco CEO Bob Dennis said during the conference call that skate will continue to be a key category for Journeys for spring.

Journeys will have 819 stores by the end of its fiscal year.

Executive Edition Examining consumer spending in Canada and Australia
November 26, 2008 05:47 AM

Today we examine retails sales trends in two other important markets for the action sports world: Canada and Australia.

Yesterday, the Canadian government released surprisingly strong retail sales figures for September. Retail sales increased 5.8 percent vs. the same month last year.

Compared to other countries, Canadian retail sales have held up quite well, showing positive year-over-year growth so far this year.

Clothing sales have had a tougher road, however, and posted negative growth in March and August vs. the same months in 2007. But sales rebounded in September along with overall retail sales.

November 25, 2008 07:10 AM

Today, we examine 2008 monthly retail sales in major European markets to get a sense of how important countries to the action sports industry are faring. All the data comes directly from European government sources.

While some countries are technically in a recession there, others are not and are faring better. There is even some glimmer of hope in some of the September and October data.

Pent up demand could help retail sales
November 25, 2008 07:04 AM

There's an interesting survey out today that says more shoppers plan to shop on the day and weekend after Thanksgiving than last year. Also, more people said they will be shopping for themselves than last year.

The International Council of Shopping Centers survey says 45 percent of those surveyed said they will shop on Friday or the weekend vs. 36 percent in 2007. A whopping 81 percent of those who will shop said they will shop for themselves vs. 69 percent in 2007.

Michael Niemira, the ICSC's chief economist, who called the results "surprising," said bargains may bring shoppers out despite the downturn.

"These results further underscore how pent-up ...  Read More...     Email to Friend

Breakfast with Rhythm General Manager Jamahl Grey
November 25, 2008 06:00 AM

I had breakfast the other morning at Cappy's in Newport Beach with Jamahl Grey, the general manager of the Australian brand Rhythm. Jamahl was in the States to meet with Jye Townend, who is managing the U.S. Rhythm operation, and to check in with key retail accounts.

Rhythm's first shipment in the U.S. market will arrive in stores in January. The brand landed some good accounts for its first season, including Sun Diego, HSS, Surf Club Surf Shop, South Coast Surf Shop, ZJ Boarding House, Rusty, Infinity Surf, Mitch's Surf Shop, Swell.com and Thalia Surf Shop.

Rhythm is best known for its colorful boardshorts, but also has walkshorts, wovens, T-shirts, tanks ...  Read More...     Email to Friend
