Buell Wetsuits & Surf Welcomes Leif Engstrom to the Team

Print Friendly and PDF

Who better to test Buell’s new Rubberbones technology than the rubberband man himself -- East Coast’s Leif Engstrom?!  You may remember this wiry wave wizard from his sections in the Taylor Steele-produced, “Innersection” surf-clip contests. His entries were always a highlight, with the goofyfooter hucking and spinning every which-way like a human-slinky; blessed with an aerial act that could put a tightrope walker to shame. With his innate sense of flight coupled with a complimentary rail and barrel game, this New York native has proven that he’s got the skills to pay the bills. Now, Engstrom will be donning Buell Wetsuits while he continues to push the limits with his acrobatic surfing.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be riding for a core surf brand like Buell.”comments Engstrom about the new partnership.“I’ve felt pretty restricted in my suits the last few years, and putting these things on was a whole new feel. Super flexible and very comfortable; I can't wait to get back in the cold and get these suits on!”

This partnership marks an eastern expansion by the Buell Wetsuits & Surf brand. By bringing the future-forward designs of wetsuit kingpin Ryan Buell to the frigid water of the Northeast, Buell will continue to blow up as one of the best “working man’s” wetsuit brands in the water -- capable of keeping you warm and cozy from Montauk to Maine and beyond. Buell Wetsuits & Surf Brand Manager Matt Rockhold is psyched to get Engstrom on the program.

“We at Buell Surf are very excited to have formed a partnership with east coaster and New York charger Leif Engstrom! He is a perfect test pilot for our cold and warm water wetsuits, spending part of his time in New York and the rest in Puerto Rico. Watch out for Leif around the world... ramping out, rushing slabs and producing sick edits! We are psyched to add Leif to our growing global roster of professional surfers! Welcome to the team, Leif!”

Founder, Ryan Buell, envisioned a wetsuit brand, unlike the rest. When he founded Buell Wetsuits & Surf out of his garage, the plan was simple, make the best wetsuits in the world and sell them to a few select surfers. A grassroots plan to create demand. Designing prototypes in his Santa Cruz, CA garage, Ryan's vision came to life. Soon Buell would be making custom designs for surf industry leaders including Volcom, Reef, RVCA, and Oakley. During that time he had the opportunity to work with many of the world's top surfers such as World Champions Carissa Moore and Adriano DeSouza. Other notable test pilots included Bruce Irons, Dusty Payne, Mitch Colburn, Kai Otten, Nat Young, Bede Durbidge, Dean Morrison and Coco Ho. Fast forward to 2018, Buell still designs and builds wetsuits for major action sports brands but now has a team of seasoned surf industry veterans working with him to launch Buell Wetsuits & Surf on a global scale.
