Press Release:

San Juan Capistrano, Calif. – August 23, 2010 – Surfing America, the national governing body for the sport of surfing in the USA, today announced some new fundraiser initiatives starting this Fall.

“There are many wonderful people in the surfing community that want to give back to the sport that brings so much enrichment to their lives,” said Michael Gerard, Executive Director of Surfing America. “And, as a California 501 (c) 3 not-for-profit Public Benefit Corporation, Surfing America has created several ways to do just that. But we’re also looking ahead, with a focused vision, to the organization’s 20-year development plan. Surfing America seeks to advance some fantastic long-term projects toward the betterment of the sport–and now is the time to solidify additional fund raising mechanisms that will maximize the organization’s success.”

For as little as twenty dollars per year, supporters and non-competitive surfers can become Donor Members of Surfing America and receive a 20% discount at PacSun stores all year long. Donor Members also have the satisfaction of knowing that they are contributing to the fulfillment of Surfing America’s Mission.

The Mission of Surfing America is to promote the growth, competitive success, and positive image of surfing in the USA and to provide the best possible experience for all participants by encouraging, developing, advancing, and administrating the sport–while producing champions.

Today, former World Champion, Environmentalist, and Author, Shaun Tomson, became Surfing America’s first Donor Member.

“I’m so impressed at the progress Surfing America has made in the past few years,” said Tomson. “And I’ve recently had a chance to meet some of the kids on the PacSun USA Surf Team. Not only are they excellent athletes, but they’re incredibly bright, poised, and articulate young men and women. These young surfers are the future of our sport and I’m confident that they will be great representatives. The surfing community should be extremely proud of this program and support it anyway it can.”

As a further sign of his commitment, Tomson has agreed to help support Surfing America as a celebrity spokesperson. “It’s my true pleasure to give back and help out youth surfing in anyway I can,” he added.

In addition to the Donor Membership Program, Surfing America is hosting a fundraiser event at the Surf Lodge in Montauk, New York on Saturday, September 4th.

The Labor Day “Block Party” event will be the first in a series of fundraisers that include dinner and drinks, live music, dancing, and a silent auction. Other locations slated for future Block Parties include Malibu, Montecito, Laguna Beach, and Stone Harbor, NJ. Surfing America plans to hold these Block Party events annually and to support the silent auction on-site with an online version that runs simultaneously.
