Over 300 CEOs, employees or future employees of the industry gathered in Seignosse on October 6 and 7 for a cycle of open-minded conferences at the annual Action Sports key industry event, the EuroSIMA Surf Summit.
Once again, this year’s speakers had been carefully selected for their expertise and inspirational presentations to help companies innovate or reinvent themselves. “The world around us is changing fast, so it is up to us to be open-minded and adapt” said Wilco Prins, EuroSIMA President in his opening speech.
Throughout the two days of intense conferences, contents including a variety of themes ranging from the evolution of sports markets, new business models, how the mind influences performance, the importance of living out your dreams, the digital revolution or expectations of the new generation.
Alongside the conference, attendees enjoyed the Surfing Lounge exhibit, which showcased the most innovative and creative products in the Action Sports industry. For the 3rd edition of the exhibit, forty brands were represented through nearly one hundred products. “Our passion is what guides us in this industry. It’s the key of our success. We make quality products that make people dream and we make sure everyone have access to them” declared Wilco Prins.
The Waterman’s Ball closed the Surf Summit work conference with a festive evening for all with a “Ghetto Blaster” theme and an 80s hip hop dress code for the 300 guests. During the event, the EuroSIMA Surf Industry Awards celebrated and rewarded the innovation and European athletes of the year.
Sixteen innovations competed for the Innovation of the Year Award. The names of the three finalists were announced: the ultra solid “The Mission smartwatch” designed by Nixon for boardsports, the nature-inspired S-wings surfboard fins and the Yulex neoprene-free wetsuit by Patagonia. The latter took home the 2016 Innovation of the Year award. “Patagonia brought the first neoprene-free wetsuit to the market. It’s a massive step forward for the wetsuits industry and we want to encourage everyone to join that journey for a more conscious industry” said Gabe Davies, Surfing Division Manager at Patagonia. Patagonia donated the 5000 prize money to the non-profit association Surfers Against Sewage, which aims to protect oceans, waves and coastlines.
Surfers Johanne Defay and Leo Fioravanti respectively received the Female and Male European Athlete of the Year Award for their performances and influence in the European and international surfing worlds. The awards were handed out by European team managers of leading boardsports brands: Quiksilver, Roxy, Billabong, Rip Curl, Volcom and Hurley.
These two days full of encounters, debates, shared values and networking fit perfectly in the Hossegor Surfing Week program, a week of cultural and athletic events dedicated to the “surfing culture.”
