WSL Names Former Gaming Exec as Next CEO
The World Surf League ended the search for its next CEO, tapping Ryan Crosby for the top spot.
The executive, whose appointment is effective May 13, previously served as president of publishing at Riot Games. He oversaw product management, marketing, and community teams globally for the gaming company.
Crosby has also served in various positions at Call of Duty, Xbox, and streaming companies such as Hulu and Netflix.
“I am excited to leverage my experience to elevate the WSL brand, deepen our connection with fans, and continue building something that surfers can be proud of,” Crosby said in a statement.
He joins the organization as it continues to seek different ways of generating revenue, expanding sponsorship deals to new names in a bid to grow its audiences. That includes its first-ever deal with Lexus, which it announced in January for the Pipe Pro. Broader interest from media outlets outside surf, such as Buzzfeed and Complex, is also helping put surf in front of new viewers.
“Ryan’s exceptional track record across some of the most important media platforms, his authentic, approachable manner, and his genuine passion for surfing make him a great fit to lead the WSL into its next chapter of growth and innovation,” WSL principal investor and board member Dirk Ziff said in a statement announcing Crosby’s hiring.
The incoming CEO succeeds Erik Logan, who abruptly exited the organization last summer after being with the WSL since 2019. No explanation was given for Logan’s departure.
Since then, the organization has been led by Chief People and Purpose Officer Emily Hofer and COO and Chief Legal Officer Bob Kane.
