Finisterre Launches First North American Retail Location
Finisterre, the UK-based pioneer of cold-water sustainable surf apparel, is pleased to announce the opening of its first-ever North American retail storefront in partnership with Maine Surfers Union in Portland, Maine. Situated in the heart of Portland’s bustling Old Port shopping district and just a short distance from Maine’s rugged coastline, beaches, and surf breaks, the store provides the perfect launching pad and community hub as Finisterre begins its global retail expansion into North America.
Chris Evans, President & General Manager of Finisterre North America, says, “We are beyond stoked to launch this partnership with Maine Surfers Union and the Portland, Maine community, who we know share many of Finisterre’s same values and passions.”
The 1,100 sq ft storefront has been remodelled to reflect the look, feel, and values of the brand’s 11 retail stores across the UK. The store will be fully stocked with Finisterre’s high-quality everyday garments for men and women, as well as its pioneering performance wetsuits, swimwear, and accessories. Visitors can expect brand classics, like the best-selling fluorocarbon-free Stormbird Waterproof Jacket for everyday adventures, alongside technical waterwear such as the women’s Anella swimsuit and men’s 2mm Yulex® shorty wetsuit – ideal garments for the variable weather conditions of coastal New England and beyond.
Finisterre’s new retail space will further enrich the strong community of surfers and outdoor enthusiasts cultivated by Charlie Fox, Founder of Maine Surfers Union.
“It’s a significant moment in our journey to launch Finisterre at the Maine Surfers Union store. As the Founder, I can’t think of a better place for us to showcase our brand. A huge thanks to Charlie and the crew for making it happen,” said Finisterre Founder Tom Kay.
Charlie Fox added, “It’s always refreshing when collaborations align with shared values and goals. The alignment between the rugged, adventure-ready product offerings of Finisterre, alongside Maine Surfers Union’s wood-roasted coffee and hand-shaped surfboards, creates a cohesive shopping and community experience. We couldn’t be more excited to continue to invest in and build this partnership.”
Customers can anticipate a series of collaborative events between the two brands, including film screenings, beach clean-ups, roundtable discussions, and garment repair workshops. An extension of Finisterre’s popular Lived and Loved repair program will be available in the store later this summer. Finisterre will also seek to engage local artisans and vendors for collaborative products and unique partnerships, starting with a 100% organic cotton tee featuring York-based artist and surfer Ty Williams, exclusively available at the store.
Located at 15 Free Street, Portland, Maine 04101, the remodelled store is now open. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 am to 5:30 pm, with wood roasted coffee served in the mornings and local Maine craft beer in the evenings.
About Finisterre
Born from the needs of hardy British surfers, Finisterre makes enduring outdoor wear for an inspired life in and around the sea. It started in 2003 with an innovative fleece that was designed to keep out chill winds and warm up cold bodies. Since these early days, driven by those who have jumped on board, the brand and product has widened beyond these original beginnings. Yet from their cliff top workshop in Cornwall, they stay true to their original design ethos of functionality and sustainability brought to life in an understated style and identity.
