The path to the corner office at action sports brands often starts at a core shop. So I've been talking to some industry leaders about where they started and what they learned along the way. Monday, we heard from Rick Petri.

For today's story, I checked with John Wilson, president of Reef. He still remembers his first day on the job at Clairemont Surf Shop in San Diego, working for owner Steve O'Connell. It was Aug. 1, 1986.

Editor's note: Today we debut a new feature called "Core Careers" where industry leaders share details about their career paths, key business advice, how they handle tough issues at work, and future aspirations.

Today we hear from Ryan Heuser, president and co-founder of Paul Frank Industries in Costa Mesa, Calif. Ryan talks about his dreaded - and brief - job at Urban Outfitters, the challenges and opportunities of switching to a licensing model, and creating space in his day to think.
