Around the world, some optimism amid general consumer pessimism

Like Americans, consumers around the globe are pessimistic, but in some regions they appear to be gaining confidence. Today we take a look at the consumer-sentiment indexes for three nations important to the industry – Australia, Japan and France – to gauge where consumer spending appears to be heading in coming months. In each country, consumer sentiment is at or near record lows, and has been for much of the year. But as you’ll see, in some countries, the indexes suggest that the worst pessimism may be behind.
