Protect Our Winters Guides 50M Strong Outdoor State Along Path to Vote
Uniting the 50 million members of the Outdoor State who love the land, Protect Our Winters (POW) is helping them to make a plan to vote. There is no easier or more effective way to turn a passion for outdoor sports into action to protect the outdoors than by voting. As people who ski, snowboard, climb, hike, bike and run know, a good plan makes all the difference in reaching the destination or not. POW’s MakeaDamnPlan.org provides step-by-step navigation ensuring that even a global pandemic and efforts to suppress the mail-in vote won’t become obstacles on the most important journey of 2020—ensuring every vote is counted.
Thirty-five percent of 18-29 year olds, who said they “definitely voted” in the 2014 midterm election, in fact did not vote.
“At 50 million strong, those of us who live to play outdoors are the largest and potentially most influential voting block in the country. But to have influence, we must vote,” said Mario Molina, Executive Director of Protect Our Winters. “Protect Our Winters’ Make a Plan to Vote tool provides personalized, behavioral science-based nudges and planning actions that are shown to increase voter turnout by 9.1%, which is nearly 5 million people in the Outdoor State, could be the difference in tight races.”
Protect Our Winters’ Make A Plan To Vote tool goes beyond other voting and registration tools, guiding people the whole way through their chosen routet to the ballot box–whether voting by mail or in person–not just redirecting to a state website. POW’s tool is especially helpful in navigating unseen obstacles like additional paperwork and needing an excuse to vote by mail in some states (spoiler alert: COVID-19 is a reason for everyone). POW’s MakeaDamnPlan.org tool will even mail materials including a stamped return envelope that is needed to register to vote by mail in some states.
“Common Ground,” a video starring Protect Our Winters’ Athlete Alliance and narrated by Jimmy Chin, climber, Oscar award-winning filmmaker, and member of POW’s Athlete Alliance, is out today. “As Americans, we all come from different places and have different stories. But we are united by the places we love to play. It’s not left or right, it is literally our common ground. I encourage all of those who love the land, to join us and make a plan,” said Jeremy Jones, professional snowboarder and founder/president of Protect Our Winters.
POW’s Athlete Alliance with a combined social reach of more than 39 million, is being matched with the massive reach of POW Partner brands including The North Face, Burton, Skullcandy and more, and media buys to guide people who love the land, to make their plan to vote. Because in the Outdoor State, everyone must make it to the trailhead and back by November 3, and no one is left behind.
