The Buckle Reports June Slide in Women’s, Footwear
Industry retailer The Buckle Inc. saw overall sales fall in June, with declines in the women’s business and footwear category.
The Kearney, Nebraska retailer said Thursday net sales for the five-week period ended July 1 totaled $108 million. That was down 1.8% from the year-ago period.
Comparable store sales for the same five-week period were off 2.4% from a year ago.
The retailer’s women’s business fell 6.5% during the five-week period, with price points rising 1.5%.
Men’s, in contrast, ended the month with sales up 1% and prices rising 5%. Men’s was the largest driver of revenue in the period, accounting for about 59% of overall sales.
The Buckle also reported results for the accessories and footwear categories across men’s and women’s.
Accessories, which accounted for 13% of sales, increased 5% in the month.
Footwear, meanwhile, fell 10% and generated about 8% of sales.
The company had previously reported pressure on the footwear category due to the lapping of a tough comparable and an uptick in inventory of casual brands in the broader market.
That would be consistent with what other footwear retailers, including Journeys parent Genesco Inc. and Foot Locker Inc., noted earlier in the year with heavy promotions being used to work through excess inventory.
